The Art of Classical Guitar, Vols 1, 2 & 3

First published in 1989/90, these 3 volumes are a complete study method for students of the classical guitar. Regarded as one of the best tutor-book series in recent years, The Art of Classical Guitar is a comprehensive study of the technique and music of the guitar. It has become a widely used text by music teachers, schools systems, and college curricula. Much of the musical material now forms part of the Australian Music Examinations Board’s syllabus for guitar.

The Art of Classical Guitar, Vol 1 (140 pages)

Vol 1 takes a student from 0-2nd grade standard and requires approximately 18 months of consistent study and tuition to complete.

In large detailed sections this book focuses upon Rest Stroke technique, Free Stroke technique, and the combination of these in a variety of musical contexts.

The solos include the traditional didactic works for guitar by Sor, Carulli, Giuliani etc, as well as many interesting new solos by the author and numerous teacher/student duets.

The Art of Classical Guitar, Vol 2 (146 pages)

The Art of Classic Guitar, Vol 2, takes a student from 3rd-5th grade standard and follows logically the path set by Vol 1 introducing slur technique, dotted rhythms, new keys/scales, higher position playing, and full-barring technique.

Music of the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods are all represented, as is traditional Spanish music and several contemporary Australian composers.

The Art of Classical Guitar, Vol 3 (132 pages)

Vol 3 takes a student into the advanced realm, up to approx. an 8th grade standard. This book focuses upon the study of specific guitar works which were originally intended to develop greater dexterity, flexibility, independence, and musical nuance from a player’s technique.

It contains many exercises and pieces for higher position playing, and many tips and suggestions for perfecting right hand techniques like the tremolo.

It is expected that a student would be learning various major repertoire works outside the study of this book to apply its principles within.
