Five
Pieces for Guitar Music
Composer
Gary Rutledge has many works for piano, violin, guitar, flute
and guitar, string quartet, saxophone quartet, musicals for
secondary school students, and contemporary experimental pieces.
The music of Bartok, Brouwer or Villa Lobos would be the best,
broad description of the character and style of these fine
compositions for guitar. With
the exception of "Daydream", which beginners could master
with practice, the pieces are mostly suitable for intermediate
students, those with 2 years or more serious tuition on guitar.
"March, the second title in the collection is the most demanding
because of some extended left hand stretches. "Caprice" is
a delightful piece that is also an AMEB syllabus set work
(Third grade). These are well-contrasted pieces, each expertly
crafted on specific compositional motifs and ideas, each with
its own mood and ambience. They abound with uncommon time
signatures, rhythmic diversity and unusual harmony; and they
have the quality of inviting students to develop their individual
expression through the music. Highly recommended for introducing
new 20th century guitar music to students.
Five
Guitar Quartets
For
intermediate and advanced student guitarists, these quartets
are a great contribution to the ensemble repertoire for guitar.
First released in 2001, these pieces employ minimalist writing
techniques, modal and diatonic melodic language, and contrapuntal
textures that make them ideal performance program material.
Suitable for senior secondary school and early university
level students. This publication includes 4 separately bound
booklets for each individual guitar part, and a conductor's
scorebook.
